Zyrianov: Spain is not good without Raul

Zyrianov, 30, was a key component in Zenit St Petersburg’s UEFA Cup winning side this season and the tricky midfielder will be eager to recreate that form for his country in Euro 2008.

Russia’s campaign kicks off this evening against Group D favourites Spain. Many believe La Seleccion have for a long time been a great side simply underachieving, but Zyrianov contends their only “big star” is all-time leading scorer Raul, who was controversially omitted from coach Luis Aragones’ squad, with rumours of a rift or political issue between the two remaining relentless.
The midfielder went as far as to clarify his statement by expressing that Fernando Torres – now of Liverpool and realising his potential – is a “good forward” and nothing more. Whether Spain will be made to rue the absence of Real Madrid’s Raul remains to be seen, as they look set to start David Villa and Fernando Torres up front this evening.

“Spain is a good team, but I wouldn’t say any more than that,” he declared.

“Their big star is Raul, but he’s not in the squad. Of the rest of them, I don’t see any big stars. Torres is a good forward, but nothing more.”
